The Scorpions from Soweto have won the five-a-side football competition known as the Kia Champ into the Arena Tournament and will be representing South Africa in the international street football competition to take place between 22 and 25 July in Argentina. The team with much showboating skill beat last year’s winners and South African representatives, Randburg Spurs, 5-1.
The margin between the two sides was only a goal difference at half time but the Scorpions proved too strong for Randburg during the second half. The match between the two sides showed much skill and shibobo that South African street football is known for despite being a one-sided affair.
The two day competition which took place in Randburg, Johannesburg, saw 32 teams from Gauteng compete to eventually find the team to represent the country in the international tournament and the stands were packed on the two days with spectators enjoying some of the best street football in a formalised manner.
At the end of the proceedings on the last day the sponsor of the tournament, KIA, donated R20 000 to the Shout Campaign and the cheque was accepted by Danny K and Kabelo from TKZee. Shout is a musicians’ campaign against crime in South Africa.
The football competition has been concentrated in Gauteng and KIA has promised to take it countrywide in order to really find the best street football team in South Africa.
